SAT nonlinear functions practice questions

Quadratic and exponential functions. You evaluate them, find a minimum or a vertex, read growth and decay from a model, and work with shifts like f(x − 1).

The usual trap

In an exponential model, the base isn't the rate. A base of 0.9 means a 10% decrease each step, and a base of 1.06 means 6% growth.

  1. 01Question 1

    Easy

The number of subscribers to a newsletter increases by 6% each month. Which of the following best describes this relationship between the number of subscribers and the number of months?

  2. 02Question 2

    Medium

The function g is defined by g(x) = 800 · (0.9)ˣ. By what percent does g decrease for each increase of 1 in x?

  3. 03Question 3

    Hard

A food truck owner models the daily profit, in dollars, from selling sandwiches at a price of x dollars each with the function P(x) = −20(x − 3)(x − 15), where 3 ≤ x ≤ 15. What is the maximum daily profit, in dollars, predicted by the model?
